Clifton Harbour on Union Island is 'only' protected by Newlands reef. Anchoring behind a reef was a new experience for us: the harbour is open to the full force of the trade winds and just beyond our anchor the waves pounded on coral, a near-invisible submerged structure protecting our comfortable bunks from 4500 km of open ocean. On this picture Marein is snorkelling in the brilliant green-turquoise water to check on the holding of our ground tackle.
